Frequently asked questions
The 24 Seven Fostering Panel has a key role to play in the agency’s decision-making process. They are governed by the Regulations that are set out under the Care Standards Act (2000).
The panel is independent of 24 Seven Fostering Services and has a remit to make recommendations about the approval of foster carers to the Managing Director. A foster parent is also included in the panel membership. The Fostering Panel are responsible for conducting annual reviews on foster families and recommending their continued suitability for the tasks they have been recruited to perform. They will share and disseminate information across agencies and process any information in relation to statutory agencies on matters of child protection allegations. Where there are complaints relating foster families, the Fostering Panel must recommend to the Managing Director what action needs to be taken by the agency.
What allowances are paid to foster carers?
24 Seven Fostering will provide you with an allowance to cover the costs of caring for a particular child or young person.
The expectation for 24 Seven foster carers is, that you will budget and manage your allowance as you do for your own families. The allowance will assist you to cover pocket money, clothing, fostered children’s holidays, birthday and Christmas presents, school costs, transport, leisure activities and clothing. Additional discretionary payments can be made only in certain limited circumstances.
24 Seven Fostering will pay your membership of Fostering Network, which has many valuable benefits for you.
*Assessment process - how long does it take?
The Form F assessment can take anything from 3 months up to 6 to 8 months. It all depends on statutory checks being returned, training to be attended, the size of your family and your & allocated social workers availability. The agency’s aim is to assess prospective foster carers and not have any delays.
*Do I need to have a spare bedroom or not?
Yes, foster carers need to have a spare bedroom for fostering.
*What support does the agency give?
The agency will allocate a Supervising Social Worker to each fostering household, you will have 24 hours and seven days a week support, you will be part of foster carers support groups, and these support groups meet up once every 6 weeks.
*Why do children come into care?
There many reasons why children come into the care system from being abused, home alone, neglected, illness of parent or child, asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors, parents unable to cope etc.
*What information will I receive regarding the child?
The agency will give foster carers all information known about the child which has been shared with the 24 seven.
*What training is available to me?
There is an initial Skills to Foster training course, which is a 3-day training event. 24 Seven Fostering does also provide on-going training throughout the year. Foster carers are encouraged to attend training that is going to help you be effective carers.
